Some years ago, while I was in Pune for a talk, I happened to visit a hospital to see a friend. Hospitals are places where stories quietly unfold in waiting rooms, and if one listens carefully, one often hears more about humanity there than anywhere else. That afternoon I noticed an elderly couple sitting a few chairs away from me. The husband looked tired and slightly breathless, and the wife held a cloth bag full of medical reports, carefully folded and refolded as anxious relatives often do. After a while we began to speak. They had travelled from a small town nearby because the husband had been experiencing severe chest discomfort. Their family doctor had advised them to consult a cardiologist in the city. But like many middle-class families, their biggest worry was not just the illness , it was the cost and uncertainty of treatment. They had come to meet Dr. Madhu Asawa. Dr. Madhu Asawa helped my full family in handling Covid 19 and provided total detailed guidance on the phone. He subscribed to the bare minimum of medication and pathology reports. Over many years, our family had multiple interactions with Dr. Madhusudan Asawa in Pune, and every single time we felt we are meeting not just a doctor, but a very kind and responsible human being. The first time we went to him, we were fully darlela. There was sudden chest pain in the family. BP high, sugar issues, tension in the house. Somebody told us, “Go to Dr Asawa, khup changla doctor aahe.” With a lot of hope, we went to his clinic, The Heart Clinic on Sinhgad Road. The moment we entered, the atmosphere itself felt shant. The clinic is very neat, very clean, and properly organized. Not too much show-off decoration, but very decent and classy. The waiting area is comfortable, the staff is polite, and everything runs in systematic way. When a heart patient is already under tension, this kind of calm environment gives half relief. When we first met him, he did not rush. He did not show any ego. He listened properly. Really listened. Many doctors nowadays type on a computer and don’t even look at the patient, but he gives full attention. He explained the heart problem in very simple language. He even drew small diagrams to show what the blockage is, what is artery. Even my elderly relatives understood. That day we felt little halka. After that first visit, our connection with him continued for many years. Multiple relatives of mine had procedures done by him at Poona Hospital. One had angiography.
