ABPM (Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring) allows your blood pressure (BP) readings to be recorded over a 24-hour period, whether you're awake or asleep. When you're at your doctor's office or clinic, an instrument called a sphygmomanometer is used to take your BP readings. It is believed to be able to reduce the white coat hypertension effect in which a patient's blood pressure is elevated during the examination process due to nervousness and anxiety caused by being in a clinical setting. ABPM can also detect the reverse condition, masked hypertension, where the patient have normal blood pressure during the examination but uncontrolled blood pressure at home. DOC The instrument used is a portable blood pressure machine worn as a belt, with the cuff being attached around the upper arm. All types of daily activities, including sleep, may be normally carried out while wearing this device. DOC Twenty-four-hour ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) is a precise methodto quantify BP levels and diagnose HTN. Recent studies showed that 24-h ABPM is more accurate than office BP measurements in predicting cardiovascular morbidity and mortality (3–6).
